The Way of Chipan is a documentary born from a collaboration with Arhrid, a collective of young architects dedicated to preserving the modernist architectural heritage of Ohrid.
They approached me with the idea of documenting an event honoring Boris Chipan — one of Macedonia’s most important architects and visionaries — and one of his key modernist works from the 1950s, The Resort of the Ferial Union. Once a symbol of progress and thoughtful design, the building has been left in decay for more than twenty years and is slowly falling apart.
Chipan was not only an architect and designer, but also a restorer, writer, and publicist who devoted much of his life to documenting and protecting Ohrid’s unique architectural identity. In many ways, he was instrumental in preserving the character of the city itself.
The young architects of Arhrid set out to pay tribute to his legacy through an exhibition, panel discussion, and book launch. Yet during the organization process they encountered constant obstacles — losing their venue just days before the opening and facing institutional neglect and a lack of cultural support.
Working in the spirit of cinéma vérité, I followed their efforts and frustrations, capturing their determination while gradually weaving in the story of Chipan and his work. Through their struggle, the film reveals a broader portrait of a system in decline — one that fails to protect cultural memory or provide space for art and dialogue, even in a city like Ohrid, often considered the cultural and historical heart of the country.
While directing the film, I also worked as cinematographer and editor, alongside my sister, Ema Veljanoska, who contributed as cinematographer as well. The original music was composed by Igor Vasilev Novogradska. Both Ema and Igor were essential collaborators, and their creative support shaped the film in a profound way.
The Way of Chipan premiered at the Manaki Brothers International Film Festival in September 2025.
